Vaccination against Covid-19 in Mexico

The federal government reported that a total of 134 million 694,601 vaccines against Covid-19 have been applied nationwide since the vaccination plan began on December 24, 2021.

At the cutoff on Monday, December 6, the Ministry of Health supplied 185,058 doses.

Of the 78 million 537,735 people inoculated against Covid-19 in Mexico, 65 million 487,535 have a complete scheme of one or two doses, depending on the type of biological applied. Meanwhile, 13 million 50,200 have half a scheme.

This Tuesday, the application of booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine for people over 60 years of age began in the country.

Booster vaccination with biological AztraZeneca started in six of the 32 states of the country:

  • Chiapas
  • Mexico City
  • Jalisco
  • Oaxaca
  • Sinaloa
  • Yucatan

“People vaccinated start before June 2021. The vast majority of adults over 60 were vaccinated before June 2021, but if someone was vaccinated later, take into account that they must wait until completing six months from the last vaccination” , informed Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion.

From Jalisco, at a press conference headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the undersecretary explained that to receive the booster vaccine against Covid-19, it is not necessary for people to register in advance.

“No prior registration is required, they can immediately go to the vaccination centers that will be indicated, only with an official identification that allows them to recognize their age as 60 and over.”

López-Gatell explained that the change to apply these booster doses as part of the strategy of vaccination against Covid-19 in Mexico it is due to the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) made five consensus recommendations, among others that reinforcements should focus on population groups that are more vulnerable such as older adults or those suffering from immunosuppressive diseases, in whom the efficiency of the vaccine may not be optimal.

He assured that currently “there is no conclusive evidence to recommend reinforcements in a generalized way; that is, people of any age or people who are generally healthy and who do not have these problems of lower efficiency of immunity. ”
