COM to change of leadership with Alcalá

What happened in the Mexican Olympic Sports Center is a historical event for two notable reasons: María José Alcalá is the first woman in Mexico to lead the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) after 10 presiding men since 1923 and secondly, the election it was done secretly and with the testimony of a representative of the International Olympic Committee in Mexico.

However, the quality of the proposals and decisions in the COM during the 2021-2024 period should not weigh on gender and in particular, Alcalá starts with the benefit of the doubt, since he practices negotiation skills by having current responsibilities such as the presidency of the Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, and as Federal Deputy of the PVEM (Green Ecologist Party of Mexico). In addition, he went through sports life by competing as a diver in four Olympic Games and winning the National Sports Award in 1994.

Alcalá, standard-bearer of the “I’m going through Mexico” sheet, obtained 87 votes against the 46 of Norma Olivia González, who led the “Transparency and Apertura” sheet and also had experience as a high-performance athlete in the discipline of taekwondo.

“It is historical and how good that the choice of a woman is given. Both men and women have the ability to lead any situation. Two competing women speak of an opening of their place in decision-making positions. It is positive and new in terms of action and leadership. She is remarkable for being the first woman, but responsibility should not weigh on those shoulders, but rather because of her experience and abilities, “says Juan Manuel Rotter, former swimmer and coach, manager of the sport at a public level in the state of Nuevo León and in the Conade.

The Alcalá team is made up of members with an Olympic past, which stands out as a strength in terms of the momentum of their project. One of them is Daniel Aceves, president of the Mexican Olympic Medalists Association. In his capacity as First Vice President of the payroll, he explains three main objectives:

“The first woman in 98 years to chair the COM. The president brings a program that we have prepared as a template and three elements stand out”:

1. Material, human, legal and logistical support to the Olympic and non-Olympic national Federations.

2. To form a board of trustees that grants financial resources to the public and private sector and to the Mexican Olympic Sports Center.

3. Ratify the support for delegations in regional, continental and world events, and towards the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
