CNDH opens file for arrest of José Manuel del Río Virgen, secretary of the Senate

The National Human Rights Commission announced the opening of an investigation to detect possible anomalies committed by the Veracruz prosecutor’s office derived from the arrest of José Manuel del Río Virgen, technical secretary of the Senate Political Coordination Board (JCP) and close to the head of said body, Ricardo Monreal Ávila.

“By instructions of the president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Rosario Piedra Ibarra, staff of this public body opened an investigation and issued an appeal agreement regarding the case of arrest of C. José Manuel del Río Virgen, in order to document possible acts or omissions committed by public servants of the Veracruz State Attorney General“Said the CNDH in a statement.

The organ that guarantees fundamental rights added that in recent days it received a request for intervention filed by the relatives of Del Río Virgen who warned that there were anomalies in his detention.

It is worth mentioning that the secretary of the JCP is pointed out by the local prosecutor’s office for the intentional homicide of René Tovar, candidate of the Citizen Movement in last June’s elections to the mayoralty of Cazones in Veracruz.

“By virtue of the aforementioned facts affecting national public opinion, this National Commission opened an investigation file, for which it will request the respective reports from the authorities indicated as responsible, and will issue the corresponding determination in due course,” said the institution.

Last week, the political forces represented in the Senate announced the creation of a commission to investigate possible abuses of the Veracruz government in the arrest of Del Río as well as other similar cases.
