Claudia Sheinbaum highlights reduction of pollutants in CDMX

Mexico City has managed to contribute annually with the reduction of about 2 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e), which is equivalent to the city ceasing to have cars in circulation for about a month, reported the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Within the framework of 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which takes place in Scotland, Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the city has managed to comply with the agreements of the Global Climate Summit, since there is more than 60% progress to achieve the goal of reducing the city’s emissions by 10% by the year 2024.

He explained that his administration set the goal that economic activities and investment in infrastructure, such as electromobility, help reduce polluting emissions.

“One can talk all day about climate change, but if there are no actions it remains exclusively in demagoguery, what we are doing is showing that the work we have done, even in the midst of the pandemic,” he explained.

The secretary of the Environment of the city, Marina Robles García, specified that in order to meet this reduction goal, the Environmental and Climate Change Program for Mexico City 2019-2024 was developed.

He indicated that one of the most important axes of this program is the Revegetation of the Countryside and the City, which seeks to increase the presence of trees on urban land and on conservation land.

In this regard, the production of the city’s nurseries increased, going from 250,000 plants produced in 2018 to about 10 million annually.

“Seeds of native plants are collected, capacities for fire control and management were strengthened and Gardens for Life were created,” he said.

Waste management

Another axis that has been developed is Zero Waste, through which the reduction of 1.2 million tons of CO2 per year has been achieved.

“Thanks to better waste management due to the start-up of the new Azcapotzalco Separation Plant, the generation of compost and biochar, the use of biogas in Bordo Poniente, the ban on single-use plastics, the plant for the treatment of construction and demolition waste in the Miguel Hidalgo mayor’s office and the new environmental standard for recycling said waste ”, he deepened.
