Chippewa Falls homicide suspect gets $1 million bail


CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) – Cash bail has been set at $1 million for the murder suspect in the death of 10-year-old Iliana Peters, of Chippewa Falls.

Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell requested the $1 million bail, which was granted by Judge Benjamin Lane, based on what the suspect told investigators and the need to protect the community. Newell said in court that the statement the suspect made to police was that he intended to rape and kill the victim from the start when he left the house with her. Newell said the suspect told investigators that he beat Peters with a stick before strangling the victim to death and then sexually assaulting her.

Newell said after the court appearance that he has seen cases like this before and detailed the process that led to the charges, saying “a lot of people have been involved in this.”

Two of the three charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The 14-year-old is being tried in adult court.

Chippewa Falls Police Chief Matthew Kelm said the arrest was made in the town of Chippewa Falls Tuesday night. Kelm said the suspect was not a stranger to Peters and that she knew him. Kelm said that with the suspect in custody, the public is no longer in danger. No other details about the suspect were released, including whether the suspect was related to Peters.

Kelm said more than 200 leads were provided to the Police Department, which Kelm said were critical to the investigation. Police executed a search warrant at 422 N. Grove Street, near where Peters’ body was found, on Tuesday, Kelm said.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Department of Criminal Investigation finished processing the crime scene Monday night, and the Chippewa County Coroner’s Office removed Peters’ body to perform a forensic autopsy. The medical examiner’s office in Ramsey County, Minnesota, is in charge of the autopsy.
