Chile adds new green hydrogen project

To the first initiative that appeared called “Haru Oni”, promoted by Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) and whose investment includes 51 million dollars, representing the first industrial-scale plant of its kind in Chile and one of the largest in Latin America, “H2 Magallanes” from the French company Total Eren joins.

As reported by the Ministry of Energy in a statement, it is a new large-scale green hydrogen project in the region and it will be the largest in Chile, which will be located in the San Gregorio district.

The initiative will have up to 10 GW of installed wind capacity, along with up to 8 GW of electrolysis capacity, a desalination plant, an ammonia (NH3) plant and port facilities to transport green ammonia to national and international markets. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 to start hydrogen production in 2027.

Within the framework of the project, Total Eren signed a collaboration agreement with the University of Magallanes on November 10. This public-private partnership will focus on three main pillars: environmental and social studies, education and R&D. In particular, Total Eren and the house of studies will collaborate in the preparation of the environmental impact study and in the elaboration of the Citizen Participation Plan of the project in accordance with the best practices defined by the Participation Standards Guide of the Ministry of Energy of Chile .

The four announced projects mean investments of more than 15,000 million. The Magallanes Region could produce 13% of the world’s green hydrogen.
