Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez (left) challenges Dmitry Bivol for light heavyweight gold

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s relentless quest to conquer as many divisions as possible will continue tonight, as the Mexican challenges Dmitry Bivol for the WBA light heavyweight title. Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) has held multiple belts in four weight classes, and tonight he returns to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and to the division in which he took the WBO gold from Sergey Kovalev in 2019. Between Álvarez and another title, however, is the undefeated Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs).

Last time, Canelo ended Caleb Plant’s resistance in the 11th round to become the first undisputed super middleweight champion in the four-belt era, and the first undisputed champion from Mexico in any division. If the 31-year-old succeeds here, he will go toe-to-toe with old rival Gennady Golovkin for the third time, but Canelo is already eyeing the possibility of a middleweight clash with Oleksandr Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion who he now has heavyweight gold.

However, Canelo, while viewed by most fans and pundits as boxing’s number one pound-for-pound fighter, cannot afford to overlook Bivol. The Russian has yet to taste defeat, and what the 31-year-old lacks in power (he hasn’t finished in four years) he makes up for in aggressiveness and tenacity. Follow the Canelo vs. Bivol live updates and undercard below.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Tenth round

Bivol’s energy is back in the tenth and Canelo looks increasingly tired. His feet are heavy, while Bivol is quick on his toes. The Russian lands a series of jabs and dominates the round. He has landed nearly twice as many punches as Canelo during the fight.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round Nine

A much better round for Canelo. Bivol was very active for the first minute but then seemed to tire. He allowed Canelo to walk in and grab his feet and was duly punished. Bivol was not injured, but he will have lost that round on the scorecards.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round Eight

An emphatic round for Bivol, who takes the lead foot, traps Canelo on the ropes and lands accurate shots. They’re affecting Canelo, whose face is turning red and he’s struggling to land his punches. He is trying to lure Bivol out, but the Russian has been very clever.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Seventh Round

There is no doubt now that this is turning into one of Canelo’s toughest tests. It’s not that he’s hurt, it’s just that he’s proving very difficult to stop Bivol’s jab and movement. When he comes in, Bivol catches and counters effectively and the Russian is ahead on most cards. Whether he can keep it up, and then whether he can get a decision against Canelo, remains a separate matter entirely.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Sixth Round

Canelo can only land single punches right now, and has largely abandoned his jab, knowing that Bivol’s superior size and polished technique make for a pointless battle. However, the Mexican still throws several hard shots against the arms and guard, but he can’t pin Bivol, whose movement is still excellent even if his production has dropped. The Russian ends the round strong, backing Canelo against the ropes and landing a series of heavy shots.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round Five

Canelo takes the lead early in the fifth and Bivol’s production is significantly lower. But with about a minute to go, Bivol catches Canelo on the ropes and unleashes a series of accurate punches. Canelo shakes his head and urges the Russian to move on. Bivol declines the invitation, happy to have hit his shots on goal. However, Canelo was certainly more dominant earlier in the round, landing hooks around the guard, and Bivol can’t afford to take that kind of punishment anymore.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Fourth Round

Bivol starts off strong and grows in confidence, holding his feet and switching between Canelo’s head and body. They are not necessarily hurtful blows, but they certainly score points. However, Canelo bounces back at the last minute, landing two good right hooks before a big hook with Bivol trapped on the ropes. Bivol shakes again, but that was the most eye-catching punch of the fight so far and perhaps a sign of things to come if Bivol tires later on.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round Three

Canelo lands a nice uppercut on the inside, but Bivol takes it in stride and continues to use his range and accuracy very well. The volume of him is so impressive and he is confusing Canelo for much of the round. The Mexican throws several power shots at the Russian’s arm in an effort to weaken that high guard.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round Two

Another big round for Bivol, who is a little hesitant to commit to his power shots but continues to pepper Canelo with relentless cluster shots. Canelo is getting frustrated and although he bounces back with some hard shots to the bell, it’s another impressive round for the Russian.

Canelo vs. Bivol – Round One

Bivol immediately starts peppering Canelo with a jab, using his superior reach to great effect. Canelo manages to close the distance and hook inside hooks, though Bivol manages to step back and take the sting out of the Mexican’s harder punches. Bivol’s jab doesn’t budge, relying on big volume to occupy Canelo. The first round goes to the Russian.
