Canada pays tribute to John Honderich, former editor and publisher of the Toronto Star

John Honderich, former Toronto Star editor and publisher, chair of Torstar’s board of directors and giant of Canadian journalism, died Saturday at 75.

Within minutes of the announcement, people from across Toronto and Canada shared their memories and tributes to the newspaperman, lawyer and philanthropist.

“John Honderich was a giant of Canadian journalism who believed deeply in building a better Toronto – and a better Canada,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote.

“John Honderich truly believed in Toronto, our city’s promise and its unique place in the world,” Toronto Major John Tory wrote on Twitter. “…He was a larger than life Torontonian who left us too soon and who will truly be missed.”

Joe Cressy, Toronto city councilor for Spadina-Fort York and chair of the Toronto Board of Health also shared his sentiments.

“Toronto has lost a giant today,” Cressy wrote on Twitter. “John Honderich was larger than life. A newspaper man and a city booster with a heart of gold.
