BMW: Mexico, pillar of the region

In a virtual event in which just over 150 specialized journalists from Latin America were present, the BMW Group shared the results of the operation of its different brands in 2021, a year that represented progress in seeking to achieve the figures that were recorded before the start of the pandemic caused by Covid-19. The group reported that in 2021 it sold 2,515,939 units in the world, equivalent to 8.4% more compared to the previous year. In the Latin American region, sales showed that 47,404 vehicles were placed.

For our country the balance is positive. BMW Group Mexico it sold 12,895 BMW cars, as well as 4,017 MINIs, numbers that reflect an increase of 13.4% and 7.3%, respectively, compared to the previous year. The positive trend continued for the motorcycle brand BMW Motorrad which sold 6,248 units, an increase of 18.2%. Thus, the BMW Group in Mexico registered a market share of 31.2 percent.

In addition to knowing its results, the German group also shared the marketing plans for new models and its firm intention to continue offering electric vehicles in our country.

BMW i4

It is a sedan with a fully electric propulsion coupe-type body. It is sold in our market with two versions: BMW i4 and BMW i4 M50. The differences lie in the equipment and the M aerodynamic package for the most powerful version. Both models share a battery with a capacity of 80.7 kWh. The entry model has a propeller placed on the rear axle that develops 340 hp, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and offers a range of 591 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. For its part, the BMW i4 M50 uses two electric motors, one for each axle, which together generate 544 hp, accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and have a range of up to 510 kilometers.

The BMW Group’s electric offensive for Mexico is aggressive and is characterized by its presence in different segments. In 2021 the iX was launched, which in addition to being the brand’s flagship, joins the i4 in the digitalization strategy aimed at the customer. The versions for Mexico of the iX are xDrive40 as the entry model to the family, while iX xDrive50 is the most powerful. Both are driven by two current-drive motors (eliminating the use of magnets and their components), one for each axis.

The first has a battery with a capacity of 76.6 kWh with a range of up to 425 kilometers (WLTP), while the xDrive50 uses a set of 11.5kWh batteries that allows it to reach 630 kilometers of range (WLTP). It is important to mention that the space frame is made of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), which increases its rigidity and reduces its weight. For its part, the X3, which was the best-selling model for the brand in Mexico in 2021, had a great boost thanks to the arrival of the iX3 at the end of the year.

Maru Escobedo mentioned that the hybrid and electric family grew by 22 percent. A fact that responds to the offer of each of its different brands, since the Mini Electric was added to iX and iX3; This English emission-free propulsion uses an electric motor that is located on the front axle and develops a power of 135 kW or its equivalent to 184 horsepower. But the most important thing is the torque, which, being produced by a generator, is immediately available, so its 270 Nm of torque are felt from the first moment. The transmission is a single gear and perfectly manages the recharging system.
