Auto parts companies will try to be direct suppliers of VW in Puebla

Puebla, Pue. The 36 auto parts companies that are Level 2, part of the 90 that make up the local sector, will aim to start the process of becoming certified and escalating to Level 1 in 2022, ie to be direct suppliers of Volkswagen and Audi in Puebla, as well as from other car plants installed in the country.

The President of the said sector attached to the National Chamber of Transformation Industry (Canacintra), José María Salazar, explained that the certification required by vehicle manufacturers, TS 16949 is based on ISO 9001, which refers to the quality of the product , productivity, competitiveness and continuous improvement.

He mentioned that in case of acquisition it would imply that the auto parts companies would have to reinvest in their plants to increase their production capacity and hire up to 30% more staff.

The leader explained that second-level suppliers are not responsible for the design of car parts, but only support Level 1 in production, the latter accepting the risks and costs in the event of a claim from the car factory.

He explained that in order to achieve the above standard, companies must have the economic capability to demonstrate that their workers are trained, guarantee the timely delivery of supplies and that they have complied with first-level manufacturing.

Without giving figures on how much the certifications cost, he said these companies are willing to absorb the cost, “which is difficult to pay consultants, subject their production processes to evaluations and have to take steps at management level.”

He said that the 36-level two-car parts companies until five years ago chose to continue as level one suppliers, but now they are betting on being certified, which will enable them to provide design services, technical advice and engineering as the major provide currently do.

Jobs

Salazar explained that it would bring greater benefits to the state in terms of increased investment and more jobs could be offered in the auto parts sector, which currently has 35,000 workers.

In this context, he noted that although the standards of the German firms installed in Puebla as well as others in the country are high, in the case of the small suppliers who are in the entity, they see ample possibilities for a first-level to become power. production capacity provided.

He estimated that at least 50% of Level 2 could become equal this year, as they had prepared for some of the aforementioned requirements.

He mentioned that in this guidance they have the support of chambers of commerce and universities, without having to date requested any type of support from the state government.
