“This contract lives up to the expectations and above all, the determination of our members. It’s a great victory for solidarity”, launched the three representatives of the local sections of the Syndicat des Métallos, the president of SL 6586, Jason Braconnier, the president of SL 8897, François Lévesque and the spokesperson for the SL 8060, Eric Imbeault.

Salaries will thus be increased by $9 over six years, an increase of approximately 26% over the duration of the contract. Group insurance has also been enhanced, the union said.

The new collective agreement also puts an end to the coexistence of two pension plans for new workers. “From now on, new union members will automatically join the defined benefit pension plan, whereas previously they had to choose between a defined contribution plan and a defined benefit plan,” it was explained.

This same defined benefit pension plan will thus be gradually enhanced. The pension will increase from $59 per month per year of service to $68 per month per year of service at the end of six years.

This vote to ratify the collective agreement puts an end to the conflict that began on February 2. The return to work in the two ArcelorMittal facilities, in Longueuil and Contrecoeur, will take place on Monday morning.
