AMLO seeks agreement with Calica company to develop tourist attraction

Cancun, QR. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reports that he is seeking an agreement with the company Calica to turn the enormous sascabera into a tourist attraction from which stone material had been extracted from the Playa del Carmen underground for years to be exported to the United States.

“It turns out that they gave that company two concessions, 20 years ago, to extract material and take the material by ship to the United States; They delivered the permit on November 30, 2000, two days before the new government (of the PAN) came in, i.e. (Ernesto) Zedillo was there; “They gave him the concession, they dug and left the tunnels, the term expired, both for the mine and for use by the port,” López Obrador explained.

The material bank of the said company is located in Carmen beachwhere the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) closed the plant, called ‘Sac Tun’, in 2021.

“Fortunately, the owners of this company are responding well. “This is a well-known American construction company, I do not remember his name now,” the president added.

The company is called Calicawith Mexican capital, although the president did not specify that it is associated with the American Vulcan Materials Company.

“It’s like destroying paradise, and we see it because the owners may not even know it and in one of them they even take part in environmental change conferences. So, this is where they take out the United States. And so there are other cases, a mess, “he added.

Lopez Obrador He announced that the company had sued Mexico when the concession to continue mining rock material was not renewed. “They are asking for compensation, I do not know, of millions of pesos, that is, we still have to pay them.”

He announced that they were proposing that the turquoise water flowing from the water table be rehabilitated as a tourist area due to the deep excavations of the mine, as “natural pools, seeking an agreement, but that it be no longer destroyed and that they withdraw their claim, because it has a legal basis. “

Predecessor

At the time, the alderman of SolidarityMarciano Toledo, announced that the Vulcan lawsuit against Mexico in 2020 was for $ 500 million after the cancellation of the permits to continue investigating stone material.

It should be noted that although Calica is virtually in Playa del Carmen, these lands are still part of the continental zone of the municipality of Cozumel.

The appeal would have been lodged with the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.

The Solidarity councilor has assured that the company intends to expand the mine to the properties called La Adelita and El Corchalito, adjacent to the Sac-Tun complex.

Calica in collaboration with Vulcan has been exploring the surface of that area since 1986.
