Ambassador Bridge: the Canadian economy threatened by the blockade

While the Ambassador Bridge has been blocked for four days, truckers must find an alternative if they want to cross the border.

But the situation complicates the lives of many truckers and could have significant repercussions on the Canadian economy.

“This is a situation that causes a lot of uncertainty in the supply chain with which companies must again adapt,” says Charles-Antoine Marcil, associate director at Groupe GCL.

It’s that the Ambassador Bridge, which connects the cities of Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is located where several automakers are located with factories on both sides of the border. They find it difficult to exchange coins.

Normally, millions of dollars worth of goods pass through the Ambassador Bridge every day.

“The closure of the bridge has an impact on the availability of inventories, for production, for the distribution of goods in Quebec and in Canada. Depending on how long (for) the bridge will be blocked, there may be a risk of plant closures, an impact on the delivery promise that companies can make to their customers and (that) may generate costs important for these companies”, indicates. Mr Marcil.

The blockade also gives headaches to truckers who use the Ambassador Bridge when they leave eastern Canada to go to the American West, for example. They must now make a detour and go to the Sarnia border crossing, located 108 kilometers from the Ambassador Bridge.

In the past few hours, wait times have increased dramatically in Sarnia as dozens of trucks line up to cross the Canada-US border.
