Almost 90% of Spaniards are willing to take the third dose

  • 5% of Spaniards are still reluctant to get vaccinated because they are deniers or because they believe that they have little risk of being infected

In Spain, the vaccination it continues to break records, despite the slowdown registered once the 70% level of vaccinated people was surpassed. The last Ministry report of Health indicates that 88% of the target population (over 12 years old) have the complete regimen and 90% have a dose, which places the country in the leading group worldwide. And the receptivity at the time of receiving an additional injection is very high. At the gates of some communities, such as Catalonia, beginning to administer the third dose to those over 70 years of age, a survey by the Carlos III Health Institute published this Thursday indicates that almost the 90% of the Spanish (89%) would be willing to reinforce their vaccination against covid.

It is the first time that the Cosmo-Spain study, promoted by the WHO and which has been carried out every two months since May, asks about the additional dose and the result shows, once again, the high level of confidence in vaccination, which has achieved that Spain is at the level of low risk of incidence, with 43 diagnosed cases in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants. Although the indicator has risen slightly, since the vaccination campaign began on December 27, 2020, the rate has fallen more than 200 points, although along the way there have been three waves: the one that followed Christmas, which had a peak incidence of 899 points; the one caused by Holy Week, with a cap of 235 cases, and the fifth, with a maximum of 708.

Despite this, the number of serious cases and deaths has had a downward evolution precisely due to the protective effect provided by authorized antigens. For example, in the wave after Christmas there were about 500 deaths a day and in the last seven days there have been 67.

The reluctant

In this context, survey of the Carlos III Health Institute shows a very high satisfaction with vaccines (higher than 4 on a scale in which 5 is the maximum level) and among the most cited reasons for getting vaccinated, it is indicated that it is good to protect their own health and that of others and to be able to get together with family or friends. Among those surveyed, 5% admit that does not want to be vaccinated, although the percentage of people who indicate that they lack information to decide has decreased (31% compared to 40% in the previous wave) and the percentage of respondents who indicate that they will wait a while (33% compared to 37%). The proportion of those who believe that the vaccine may have risks to your health (51% versus 45%), of those who believe that the vaccine will not be effective (36% versus 27%), those who do not believe in vaccines (21% today versus 13%) and those who think they have little chance of getting infected (19% compared to 15% in the previous round).

Vaccination data indicate that reluctant are mostly in the age group between 20 and 40 years. Thus, 94% of the target population over 40 years of age already have the complete pattern. And the age group between 12 and 19 years, which is the last that has been able to access vaccination, also has a high coverage, of 81%. Between age group from 20 to 29 years and from 30 to 39 the percentages drop to 76% and 75% respectively.

Family pressure

The survey reveals that almost 70% of parents would vaccinate their children under 12 years old If a vaccine is authorized for children, which gives a clue of what may have happened to those over 12 to 19 years of age, they live mostly with their parents and they may have pressured them to go en masse to the appointment with the prick. And, in the group between 20 and 40 years old, as there is less fear of suffering from COVID in a serious way and family pressure decreases, perhaps that is why there is greater resistance to immunization.
