A three-week-old baby dies in Qatar after contracting Covid

A three-week-old baby has died in Qatar from a “serious infection” after contracting Covid-19, the Gulf country’s Ministry of Health announced in a statement today. Coronavirus deaths are very limited among children, but health authorities in several countries have registered more cases of infection among them since the spread of the omicron variant.

The baby had “no other health problems or known hereditary diseases,” reads the statement, recalling that he is the second minor to have died from this disease in Qatar since the beginning of the pandemic. “A greater number of children are infected in the current wave and need more medical attention,” according to the same source.

The daily number of infections in Qatar has fluctuated around 4,000 in recent days, 20 times more than the figures announced in mid-December.

At the end of December, the main group of public hospitals in the country suspended the license of all its medical and administrative staff working with covid patients due to the increase in cases of infection. In total, Qatar, a country of 2.6 million people, officially recorded nearly 300,000 cases, including about 600 deaths.
