Here are six things to know about this deadly landslide.
1. The Saint-Jean-Vianney landslide, in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, occurred on the night of May 4, 1971.
2. The landslide engulfed part of the municipality which is on the current territory of the city of Saguenay. The hole he made had a diameter of 0.32 km2.
3. A few days before the landslide, one hectare of land had come loose.
4. The historic event caused the death of 31 people, including complete families. Only 15 bodies were found.
5. A total of 42 houses were destroyed. Material losses were assessed at $2 million.
6. The Premier of Quebec at the time, Robert Bourassa, announced the permanent closure of the municipality of Saint-Jean-Vianney on May 27. So 240 families, or 1,700 people, had to move.
