22 United Conservative Party constituencies call for early review of Alberta Prime Minister Jason Kenney’s leadership

EDMONTON – The internal gears of the United Conservative Party are rapidly turning against Alberta Prime Minister Jason Kenney as a group of local representatives said 22 constituencies have passed a special motion seeking to conduct a leadership review on the next three months.

A leadership review had already been scheduled for spring next year, but the new motion says the party should hold one by March 1, 2022.

The move will be seen as a move to swiftly topple Kenney as the leader of the party he helped found in 2017.

A letter signed by a group of precinct association presidents was sent to PCU president Ryan Becker, according to a press release.

The group says the fact that 22 constituencies pass the motion meets the party’s threshold for triggering a “special general meeting for the purpose of conducting a leadership review.”

Kenney has become unpopular in the province and within his own party after the summer saw a record COVID-19 crisis in Alberta.

The party’s annual general meeting is scheduled for this weekend in Calgary.

More to come …
