100th Session of the Manitoba Youth Parliament to take place this week – Winnipeg | The Canadian News

While Manitoba MLAs are on vacation in the legislative building, some Manitoba youth are hard at work thinking of ways to improve society.

The Manitoba Youth Parliament is holding its 100th session this week.

Virtually all activities are taking place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group’s goal is to allow young people to learn more about the government and how the system works.

Members can create, review and debate legislation. They also have the opportunity to meet Manitoba MLAs from all political parties throughout the year.

Pearson Singbeil Montgomery has been involved for four years. They say it gives young people a chance to see that their voice matters and offers new perspectives on long-standing issues.

“Because they haven’t been through all the blows in the world, they may be able to find different paths that people have yet to become disillusioned with,” said Singbeil Montgomery.

Singbeil Montgomery said it is a way for young people to develop diverse skills.

“Both for the business world and for the political world and other environments such as non-profit organizations,” they said.

Singbeil Montgomery adds that many people who served in Parliament have become members of the legislature.

“I think it speaks to the opportunities and connections that can be made through this platform,” they said.
