Pearson International Airport has seen a number of issues over the past several days that have led to “challenges” with baggage, according to the GTAA.

Frustrated travelers have shared videos and photos of the ongoing chaos at Pearson airport and the piles of checked bags at baggage claim.

Images and videos have surfaced online of piles of baggage at Pearson International Airport in Mississauga.

An increase in the number of travellers, coupled with staff shortages at airports around the world, has resulted in hefty wait times, delayed and canceled flights, and a formidable backup in baggage processing in airports around the world, including Toronto.

Travelers have taken to social media to share their concerns about baggage piling up at the Toronto airport.

Greater Toronto Airport Authority spokesperson Tori Gass said that a number of issues over the past several days have led to “challenges” with baggage, including flight delays and cancellations, staff shortages within airlines, and “temporary mechanical disruptions” with the baggage system.

“We have worked with the airlines to ensure unclaimed bags are removed from the carousels and staged in the baggage hall to make room for bags from other flights,” Gass said in a Tuesday email to the Star.

“Airlines have responsibility for reuniting passengers with their luggage, so for more information on this process, it’s best to reach out directly to the airlines.”

Baggage responsibility is shared among several groups at the airport, Gass added. Baggage handling — including removing bags from flights and how fast they’re loaded onto a carousel — is the “responsibility of the airline and their contracted ground handling company,” while infrastructure and maintenance of the system belongs with the GTAA.
