Year-end sales will not reach prepandemic levels: Canacope CDMX

Although the Mexico City is already in the process of economic reactivation, the Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism in Small (Canacope) local reported that sales and consumer trends for the 2021 December business season will not reach pre-pandemic levels.

Through a study, the capital business organization announced that for this end of the year season it is expected that the MSMEs generate an economic spill for 5,180 million pesos, a figure that would not be at the same level as in 2019, where profits amounted to 12,950 million.

“In 2020 there was a 60% drop below the economic impact of 2019 (an approximate deficit of 7.6 billion pesos in the sectors that could remain active),” the analysis said.

According to the Canacope Mexico City, there are a number of factors that affect sales this year-end 2021 season; For example, it highlights that the Covid-19 pandemic continues, in addition to the fact that the finances of the population have been more affected by the lack of control of prices, there is also a low investment in merchandise.

“Unemployment is intensified by a scarce labor supply, reduced wages, as well as by the specific needs in terms of working age, experience and knowledge that jobs require, which reduces the possibilities of a job”, highlighted Eduardo Contreras Pérez , president of the local Canacope.

Another factor that has affected, deepened the CanacopeIt is informal trade, since it currently represents unfair competition by offering products at low prices, without regulation, without complying with standards.

“The informal economy is an escape valve for the population, to solve their economic needs, derived from diverse socioeconomic factors, mainly due to the few opportunities for well-paid formal work,” he said.

Small businessmen highlighted that this year there have been greater mobility problems that could affect this last month more, such as marches, road closures, sit-ins. “For a business, unrealized sales can range from 20 to 80% of its daily sales.”

Improvement process

The Canacope He insisted that economic recovery actions should be strengthened during 2022; For example, the links between institutions and authorities must be further strengthened. Also, businesses have to be modernized to improve their marketing processes.

“New services should be offered such as card payment, payment for commercial services, electronic commerce and home delivery, among others,” he said.
