World Day to Fight HIV / AIDS: Figures in Mexico

By decree of the WHO, the first of December of each year is commemorated World Day to fight HIV / AIDS, which seeks to raise awareness about this virus, eradicate the stigmas and discrimination that revolve around it and invite governments to allocate more resources to its prevention and care.

In Mexico during 2020, the year of the pandemic, 4,573 deaths related to the VIH (Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus), according to figures from the Special System for Epidemiological Surveillance of HIV.

In total, from 1984 to week 41 of 2021, a cumulative 327,260 active cases diagnosed as seropositive were recorded.

In terms of prevention, it is estimated that 62% of sexually active women between the ages of 20 and 49 have undergone an HIV test, while 38% of men have done it, according to figures from the ENSANUT (National Survey of Health and Nutrition) of the Inegi.

In Mexico, one of the HIV vaccines being developed in Latin America is in the testing phase.
