The first call came in around 7 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services said, and a monitoring company reported active fire alarms, and several 911 calls followed. When crews arrived at the five-story residential high-rise floors two minutes later, they confirmed that thick black smoke was coming from the fourth floor at the front of the building.

The door to the unit had to be forced open and when firefighters entered they encountered zero visibility conditions, the fire service said. An unconscious woman was found during a search of her apartment and she was taken down to the lobby, and at 7:19 it was confirmed that she had regained a pulse.

The fire was located in a bedroom where the woman was found, Ottawa Fire said, and was considered under control at 7:19. The fire was limited to an apartment.

An investigator was sent to the scene.
