At around 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, the 34-year-old, walking west along a sidewalk in the Tamarack neighborhood, tried to cross the CN train tracks on Maple Road near 8th Street when she was struck by a train. said Scott Pattison, communications adviser for the Edmonton Police Service.

Pattison said the woman was struck by the front of a northbound train and taken to hospital in critical condition. The woman died from her injuries on Wednesday.

The collision occurred in Maple, a southeastern Edmonton community sandwiched between the CN Railroad tracks, Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday Drive. When trains cross Maple Road, the only option for residents is to wait or take an extended detour.

The rail crossing occasionally delays emergency vehicles and Jo-Anne Wright, the new ward councilor, made it a top priority.
