With Omicron Looming, Alberta Relaxes COVID Meeting Restrictions And Expands Rapid Testing

EDMONTON – With the Omicron variant looming, Alberta will relax its COVID-19 restrictions before the Christmas holidays, but the province will also provide free rapid test kits for anyone who wants them.

The new measures were announced by Prime Minister Jason Kenney and health officials on Wednesday.

Kenney said about 500,000 rapid antigen test kits will be available for free at sites across the province starting Friday.

Meanwhile, beginning Wednesday, Albertans 18 and older can meet in groups of 10 from more than two households, lifting the previous limit that limited meetings to two households. The total number of people allowed in indoor meetings is still 10.

While previously unvaccinated people were prohibited from socializing indoors during private gatherings, they will now be able to join, it was announced.

Also starting Wednesday, the province is expanding its eligibility for the booster shot to people 50 and older, as well as healthcare workers.
