In 79 years of existence, the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS) has established itself as a measure of social security in Mexico and Latin America by offering its beneficiaries medical, cultural, educational services, economic benefits; Throughout its history, it has demonstrated its ability to respond to natural disasters and health crises. Today, with the dedication of its workers, health services are provided to 83.2 million Mexicans.

Social Security serves the largest number of the population: in the Common Regime, 71.6 million potential beneficiaries at the end of 2021 and in the IMSS-BIENESTAR program, 11.6 million beneficiaries.

With a health team consisting of 146 000 male and female nurses, and more than 84 000 male and female doctors, on a typical day in the Common Regime 404 118 consultations are granted, of which 303 469 Family Medicine, 54 000 335 thousand Specialties, 938 of dental type and 36 thousand 916 of Emergencies.

The IMSS has 1,531 General Practitioner Medical Units (UMF), 251 General Hospitals, 25 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE), 34 Outpatient Care Units (UMAA), 16 Eye Care Centers, 10 Breast Cancer Detection and Diagnosis Units, 18 thousand 774 operations, one thousand 119 operating rooms, 56 thousand 753 beds, of which 35 thousand 802 are registered, 19 thousand 18 unregistered and one thousand 933 of Intensive Care.

To address the pandemic, 11 Covid-19 Temporary Assistance Centers (CATs) were built: three in northern Mexico City, two in Chihuahua and one in Durango, Poniente State of Mexico, Morelos, Jalisco, Nuevo León and Zacatecas , which makes it possible to add. 736 beds.

Social Security also provides care to the rural population through the IMSS-BIENESTAR program, which has an infrastructure of 80 Rural Hospitals, 3,622 Rural Medical Units, 184 Health Brigades, 140 Mobile Medical Units and 45 Rural Midwifery Care Centers in 19 states. This program is a forerunner in the provision of medical services based on the Comprehensive Health Care Model that links medical care and community action.

In a typical day, IMSS-BIENESTAR provides 51 thousand 466 Consultations of Family Medicine, Specialties, Emergencies and Dentistry; 3,593 antenatal consultations, 254 surgeries, 27,663 clinical trials, 248 deliveries, 6,825 gynecological examinations, 1,492 cervical examinations, 1,287 cytologies, 8,241 nutritional status assessments of children under five, 1,1313 hypertension of children under five, 4 113 hypertension, 4 1313 diagnosis.

In the IMSS, social, sporting, cultural and economic benefits are a fundamental axis in the institutional work. The beneficiaries have access to the Nursery Service for more than 210 thousand children, more than four million pensions are paid and more than 9 million disabilities are granted; more than 560 000 job risks are qualified, more than 70 000 allowances are provided for marriages, and about 24 000 funeral services are offered.

The beneficiaries have sports, leisure and cultural activities in Holiday Centers, Shops and Theaters; in addition to health promotion programs, disease and accident prevention, technical training courses and job training.

In terms of incorporation and collection, the IMSS reached a historical affiliation of 20 million 620 thousand 148 posts in 2021; the annual growth was more than 840 thousand jobs, the highest in the existence of the Institute. There is a record of one million 53 thousand 670 employer registrations, which equates to an annual growth of 5.3 percent.

Through the Directorate of Incorporation and Collection (DIR) a collection of 382 billion pesos (mdp) was achieved, a historical maximum figure since this record was held and which was 32 thousand mdp higher than that obtained in 2020; 93 out of every 100 pesos of the Institute’s income comes from worker-employer fees.

The IMSS has strategies for more people to access social security, such as the Domestic and Independent Workers Pilot Program. In December last year, 41 thousand 373 Domestic Workers and 11 thousand 627 Independent Workers were affiliated, with an average salary of 206 and 244.7 pesos per day respectively.

On a typical day, the DIR collects 1,500 million pesos, performs 126 control actions, 439 employer registrations, 17,000 procedures at the subdelegation window, 7.6 thousand certificates for unemployment withdrawal, 899 data corrections of the insured, imports 152 million pesos for the determination of the provisions. of the premium and amendment of the classification of companies, issues 11 000 tax credits, provides among others 2 836 telephone orientations and 42 000 orientation and distribution e-mails.

The Institute is also advancing in the modernization of its digital services and implementing strategies to achieve Digital Transformation, which implies the development of new platforms or the improvement of existing ones to perform procedures and services, which has an impact on 56 million beneficiaries.

Since the beginning of 2020, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, a new reality has been experienced which has involved making IMSS processes more efficient through the use of Information and Communication Technology, to facilitate remote operations that break the chains . infection.

In response to the health crisis, strategies have been developed such as Find Out About Your Family Member, Covid-19 Permit, Maternity Disability, New Normality, Refillable Prescription and Home Delivery of Medicines, as well as the Simplified Agreement for the Payment of Employer Employer Fees to Social Security.

The IMSS Smart Strategic Project platform has been strengthened and control screens have been implemented for remote monitoring of pediatric oncology patients, SARS-CoV-2, Covid response teams, HIV, first visit offer, New Normality, among others.

The most important services rendered in 2021 were: Proof of validity of beneficiaries (34 million procedures), records and explanations of quoted weeks (18 million), allocation and location of the social security number (17.8 million), National Health Card ( five million), registration of insured, spouse, concubine, children and parents (3.9 million), Unemployment retirement certification (3.1 million), among others. The IMSS Digital platform has made it possible for most of these services to be performed remotely.
