Winter DANA: cold, rain and snow in Spain next week

This weekend the ‘polar jet’ which is currently intensifying, a process that could generate a powerful Atlantic ridge west of the British Isles and a squall in central Europe which would cause the entry of a possible isolated depression at high levels (DANA) over Spain that would tend to move later towards the Mediterranean and that will generate cold air and snowfall in large areas of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, according to the Meteored expert, Francisco Martín.

The expert predicts that, as of Sunday, the atmosphere in the country is likely to cool down due to the entry of the north wind caused by the formation of an “Atlantic blockade ridge”, together with a descending branch from north to south oriented to the peninsular territory.

In this way, the resulting DANA would trigger an episode of “abundant rains” in the northern third of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and Levantine areas. Precipitation is also expected in Canary Islands, although its origin is the result of other cloud systems.

The prediction also points out that snowfalls could affect “many” high areas of the peninsula and the North Plateau. In the words of Martin, “this invasion seems to be practically assured” and adds that, together with the wind, the feeling of cold will be “intensified”.

For all these reasons, Martín predicts a “time change” for next week which, if confirmed, would be “the first onslaught of winter” although he has ruled out that there will be “the arrival of a new”Philomena‘because the dynamics and the genesis of the situation is not the same “, although he has warned that” we will have to be attentive “to the prediction.

Constitution Bridge: cold and rainy

Facing the Bridge of the Constitution, from December 6 to 8, ‘eltiempo.es’ has advanced that the models reveal that it is usually cold and rainy according to an analysis carried out with data between the period from 1981 a 2010, when it is verified that the rain makes an appearance in more than half of the occasions in the whole territory, including the archipelagos. However, rain is more common in the west and northwest, and less in the southeast.

Thus, the rainiest city is Lugo, where it has precipitated 96% of the years, also raining 74% of the days. Castilla y León also stands out, with 83% of the years and 51% of the days with precipitation in Valladolid. In the southwest, Cáceres presents 79% of the wet years, with a total of 53% of the days with some type of precipitation. On the contrary, rainfall is lower in the southeast of the peninsula and the east of the Canary Islands. In San Javier (Murcia) it rains 50% of the years, but it has barely done so on 21.8% of the days while in Lanzarote it has rained almost 57% of the years but only 26.6% of the days. This means that although it is normal for it to rain, these rains are usually scarce and concentrated in one or two days.

Also, December may be dominated by the stability and mists. These fogs, in areas such as the Duero Valley or in Lleida, can be very persistent and thick and produce weak rainfall, increasing the number of years and days in which there is rainfall in the places where they affect. Snowfall can also occur, especially in areas of the two plateaus, so it is not uncommon to see snow in capitals such as Soria, Ávila or Teruel.

Average temperatures are quite cold in most of the country. The coldest areas are located on the two plateaus, with capitals like Soria, with 4.5ºC, and municipalities like Molina de Aragón, with 3.8ºC. In general, in Castilla y León, Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha the average temperatures are usually between 3ºC to 6ºC, which indicates a very cold environment.
