Winnipeg raffle weekend returned after three consecutive cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and there appears to have been a lot of pent-up demand for the event.

Weekends are a way to keep items out of landfills, in which Winnipegians are encouraged to leave unwanted items, from furniture to toys to kitchen utensils, on the sidewalk for other seekers of treasures take home.

The city’s waste diversion supervisor, Mark Kinsley, told 680 CJOB that Winnipeg is unique because of how often the city celebrates these popular weekends throughout the year.

He said he has received calls from other municipalities seeking to replicate Winnipeg’s success.

“It’s a pretty simple program that we encourage everyone to at least give it a try,” Kinsley said.

“As long as your communication is diligent and clear, there is no reason why it should not be as successful as Winnipeg has been.”

Kinsley said that while the statistics are difficult to track, the success was easy to see with the naked eye.

“Whoever wanted a treasure, found something, and those who wanted to get rid of some things did too,” he said.

“So again it was a great show in every way.”
