Winnipeg police are holding a 20-year-old man after reports of what appeared to be a fight in a St. John-area apartment on New Year’s Eve.

According to a statement released Saturday, officers responded to a call around 9 p.m. on December 31. There was a knock on the apartment door and a man opened it slightly, but police say it was covered in blood and they could see another man seriously injured. inside the room.

Police said officers had to force their way in because the door was locked with furniture.

The suspect allegedly armed himself with a machete and officers used a taser gun to disarm him and safely detain him.

The suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of weapons, and failure to comply with a release and parole order.
