Where do refugees come from in Mexico?

The migratory flows arriving in Mexico –whether as part of the journey or as a final destination– mostly come from Central American countries. Venezuelan and Cuban citizens also apply more frequently for asylum.

Although these flows have increased in recent years, Mexico only accepts two out of every 10 refugee applications that are requested.

Between 2013 and April 2022, Mexico formally granted asylum to 78,818 people out of a total of 341,779 who requested it, according to Comar figures (Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid).
