What you need to know about storm cleanup and where to get help | CBC News


More than 300,000 customers in the Ottawa-Gatineau region were without power Sunday afternoon after a destructive and fatal storm Saturday.

Some communities are opening emergency centers for people facing days without power and in need of help.

Ottawa it now has nine such centers, all open from 10 am to 10 pm on Sundays and Mondays. They all have bathrooms and power to charge devices, and all but one have showers:

  • The Bernard-Grandmaître Arena at 309 McArthur Ave.
  • The CARDELREC Goulbourn Recreation Complex at 1500 Shea Rd. It also has snack machines.
  • The Carleton Heights Community Center at 1665 Apeldoorn Ave. This is the one without showers.
  • The François Dupuis Recreation Center at 2263 Portobello Blvd.
  • The Howard Darwin Centennial Arena at 1765 Merivale Rd.
  • The Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Center at 3320 Paul Anka Dr.
  • The JA Dulude Arena at 941 Clyde Ave.
  • The Plant Recreation Center at 930 Somerset St. W.
  • Richmond Arena at 6095 Perth St.

That city has established a page with information about your response to the storm.

chelsea has opened the Meredith Center at 23 chemin Cecil until 8:30 p.m. It has showers, water and coffee.

Clarence-Rockland is directing people to the Clarence Creek Arena at 418 rue Lemay to get water and load up. The Red Cross is also there to help.

Many businesses and community spaces are also offering their buildings with power for use by people who don’t have it.

These are some of the other services that the storm has affected.

At 17:00 Ottawa listed about 35 road closures by downed wires or trees, including the westbound ramps connecting Highway 417 and Hunt Club Road.

The city is asking people to stay off the roads if possible to help with cleanup and emergency response.

Power outages have nullified several hundred traffic lights, according to the city, turning those intersections into four-way stops. Mayor Jim Watson asked drivers to be courteous during an evening news conference.

OC Transpo Lists several routes with detours for the damage.

Some roads in Chelsea are partially or totally blocked by debris.

The Ottawa International Airport is running on backup power and is out of food until further notice. Ask travelers to allow extra time to get there; Uplands Drive and Airport Parkway are closed southbound near the airport.

The National Capital Commission has a list of closed trails and avenues by fallen trees and debris. It includes all of its highways and byways in the Ottawa Green Belt and asks people to avoid that area and Gatineau Park for now.

Farm Boy said in a morning tweet that six stores in eastern Ontario would be closed.

The two Ottawa English School Boards and the French Eastern Ontario Public School Board, CEPEO, tweeted that crews are checking schools for damage.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board said learning will be virtual Tuesday at St. Monica School on Merival Street.
