The Hamilton Medical Officer of Health has issued a cold weather alert for the city and low wind chill values ​​are expected overnight through Sunday morning.

Friday night’s forecast calls for a low of -19 C with accompanying winds between 20 km/h and 40 km/h, which will make it feel like -26 C, according to Environment Canada.

“Wind always makes you feel colder and increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia,” Hamilton Public Health said in a statement.

“During extreme cold weather conditions, please call, visit, or check in with vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors.”

The alert has now activated five city-run recreation center warm-up locations at Bennetto on Hughson Street, Dominic Agostino Riverdale on Violet Drive, Huntington Park in Brentwood, Norman Pinky Lewis on Wentworth North and Westmount on Lynbrook Drive.

Everything will be open to the public, including those considered vulnerable and homeless. A full list of options can be viewed in the City of Hamilton’s website.

The general forecast for the city is cold and gusty through Sunday, when it is expected to warm to a maximum of -6.
