WATCH: Trudeau opens up in a free exchange with his longtime friend and broadcaster

It is the only annual interview that makes the Prime Minister’s staff more nervous.

When Justin Trudeau sits down to chat with Terry Dimonte, as he has for two decades at Christmas, he talks about his personal life in a way that he does not with any other journalist.

That’s because Dimonte is no other journalist for Trudeau. They met when Dimonte was a popular radio host in Montreal and Trudeau was a loyal listener and fan. In the fall of 2000, Trudeau wrote his famous eulogy for his father at Dimonte’s kitchen table.

Dimonte retired from his job at Montreal’s CHOM radio last spring, but now has a podcast, and Trudeau kept up the Christmas tradition this year. In later years, Star would publish articles about Dimonte’s interview and everything the prime minister revealed in the lighthearted exchange.

This year, you can see the whole conversation, a chat between old friends. here.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tends to let his guard down on veteran broadcaster and longtime friend, Terry DiMonte. See how they remember their hangouts in Montreal, the challenges of work-life balance in a pandemic, and remember what a difficult 2021 has been.
