Watch out for the new VISA credit card phone scam: Kingston Police – Kingston | The Canadian News

If you receive a phone call from VISA, you may want to think twice about who you may be talking to.

Kingston Police are warning the public about a recent phone scam in the area that is operating as a fake VISA call.

“A suspicious automated call indicates that it is VISA’s security department that is calling, and then indicates that fraudulent transactions have been made on your account that need to be rectified,” Kingston police say in a press release.

“Since the initial call is automated, you are asked to press a number that takes you to a live operator, who is actually the scammer.”

Police say the scammer will attempt to obtain personal information while posing as a representative from the VISA credit card security department.

If given personal information, the scammer could use it to steal the victim’s identity or use it for financial gain.

“Kingston Police are warning the public to avoid providing personal information to these scammers that may include your social security number, credit card or bank information, or name and address,” the statement said.

“Just hang up on the scammer after indicating that you will report the incident to the police. If calls persist, contact Kingston Police to report incidents. “
