War in Ukraine, day 787 | Russian bombing leaves one dead in the Kharkiv region

(Kyiv) Russian forces bombed two residential buildings in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, killing one person and injuring another, authorities said.

The attack took place in Vovchansk, a town about five kilometers from the Russian border that was frequently targeted during the war.

“Russian troops hit a nine-story building and a private house. A 50-year-old civilian died on the spot as a result of the impact on the house,” said the region’s governor, Oleg Sinegoubov.

A 60-year-old woman was also injured in the attack, the governor added, sharing a photo showing a pile of rubble next to the collapsed part of a multi-story residential building.

The attack took place hours after Russia fired at least seven missiles into Ukraine overnight, two of which were shot down by air defenses, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

In recent months, Ukraine has asked its Western allies to provide more air defense assets as it struggles to combat increasing Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday also urged NATO to step up arms deliveries to his struggling troops, who have lost ground to Moscow in recent months.

Ukrainian attack hits Russian energy infrastructure

Ukraine launched drones on eight Russian regions overnight from Friday to Saturday, hitting a fuel depot and three electrical substations, a Ukrainian defense source told AFP on Saturday.

“At least three electricity substations and a fuel depot were hit and caught fire. The target was the energy infrastructure that powers the Russian military-industrial complex,” the source said.

Ukraine, faced with the Russian offensive for two years, has increased its attacks against Russia in recent weeks, particularly targeting oil and gas infrastructure. Kyiv has promised to bring the fighting to Russian soil in retaliation for the numerous bombings on its territory.

The night’s strike was “a joint operation” of the Ukrainian security services (SBU), military intelligence services and the armed forces, the source added.

The governor of the western Smolensk region previously said Ukraine launched drones against “an oil and energy facility” during the early hours of Saturday, adding that it had not been shut down.

“The air defense forces shot down the aerial vehicles,” said the governor, Vasily Anokhine. “However, as a result of the falling debris, a tank containing fuel and lubricants caught fire.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said it intercepted 50 Ukrainian drones overnight, including one over the Smolensk region, without providing further details.
