Videos show crash after crash, runner hit at Richmond BC intersection | The Canadian News

A Richmond BC couple has collected some shocking evidence of how dangerous the intersection in front of their home is.

Over the past few months, Barb Howells and her husband have collected and posted videos of the intersection at Williams Road and Shell Road.

The videos show crash after crash as cars appear to pass a stop sign in front of the house and go through the intersection at high speeds.

Another vehicle shows a runner being hit in the crosswalk and then a second vehicle slows and drives away as she lies injured on the street.

“We have needed a light here for a long time,” Howells told Global News on Tuesday.

“And there have been many people asking for the light. And on our Richmond community post (on) Facebook, people say it’s way behind in our neighborhood.

The city of Richmond said there are believed to have been 10 crashes at that intersection in the past 21 months, but thankfully none of them have been fatal.

Richmond RCMP told Global News that the city now has 110 intersection cameras and the area is believed to have one camera soon.

“Richmond is a very big city and it’s getting bigger as we speak and we have several high-traffic intersections,” said Cpl. Richmond RCMP’s Ian Henderson told Global News.

“Hopefully we can get the message across that people are watching you at the intersection.”

Part of the problem with this particular intersection is that Shell Road is bisected and a CN rail line runs parallel to it, the city explained Tuesday, right between two highways.

So the city said it can’t make any major changes without CN Rail on board.

However, he did say that traffic lights will reach that intersection next March. However, it took a long time to get approved as CN Rail had other projects that it needed to prioritize first.

Henderson added that it is always a good idea to practice defensive driving, as a driver can never know what is happening to another vehicle on the road.

“It’s important to know your surroundings and drive accordingly,” he said.

For residents of the area, the changes at this intersection may not come soon enough.

“Why don’t we have light?” Howells said.

“It’s crazy. So we are very happy that this is finally happening.”
