Two of four trains from Windsor were originally suspended in January amid a winter wave of COVID-19. But in a statement earlier this spring officials said service was expected to increase June 9, which officials confirmed Wednesday.

“This is a celebratory and crucial milestone in our service resumption plan after an incredibly challenging two years,” said Via Rail CEO Cynthia Garneau in a statement.

Service had been originally been suspended for some trips to manage demand and the financial impacts of reduced ridership during the pandemic while balancing public service.

At the time, business class service was also suspended and has now returned, VIA Rail’s online booking portal shows.

Via Rail’s booking portal currently shows four departing trains from Windsor to Toronto daily beginning Thursday, with additional trains along the same corridor between London and Toronto and Toronto and Quebec City.

A Via Rail spokesperson said the Windsor to Toronto corridor is now at pre-pandemic service levels.

Existing COVID-19 protection measures, including proof of vaccination and mask requirements, remain in place per federal government regulations.
