Alex Cotton converted on a rebound after Justin Sourdif’s end-to-end run at 3:30 in overtime to give the Vancouver Giants a 3-2 win over the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday in Portland.

That ended a four-game losing streak for the Giants.
Cotton, a Detroit Red Wings prospect who came to Vancouver through a trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes earlier this season, was returning to the lineup after missing two games with an upper body injury. It was the defender’s seventh goal of the season. That ties him for the league lead among the rear with Edmonton Oil Kings blue liner Simon Kubicek. Kubicek has played 21 games, Cotton has played just 13. Cotton has three goals in five games for the Giants.
Sourdif, a center who is a Florida Panthers prospect, also scored for Vancouver, marking his seventh of the season. Winger Payton Mount, with his fourth, opened the scoring for the Giants.
Vancouver coach Michael Dyck mixed up his attacking lines going into the game. Fabian Lysell, the Boston Bruins prospect, saw much of the fourth-row minutes.
Vegas Golden Knights prospect Jesper Vikman made 41 saves for the Giants (8-7-1-0), who are in the Tri-City Americans (4-9-2-0) on Friday and in the Spokane. Chiefs (4-9-2-0) on Saturday. Due to COVID-19, this is Vancouver’s first trip to the US since a February 22, 2020 visit to Everett Silvertips.
Defender Luca Cagnoni had a goal and an assist for Portland (7-9-2-1). Dante Giannuzzi made 25 saves for the Winterhawks.
