The mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, confirmed that she was already in electoral mode, in anticipation of the municipal election which will take place in November 2025.



“What I like is to start preparing for the next campaign. People who know me know that I like electoral campaigns, being on the ground. I am happy that I and the whole party are in motion regarding the next electoral campaign,” she underlined, Monday, on the sidelines of a press conference in the Saint-Michel district.

Mme Plante reacted to the report published Saturday in The Presswho revealed that his party, Projet Montréal, had commissioned a survey to find out how he would perform against various potential opponents for mayor.

The names of a series of prominent Montreal personalities were tested there, such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, her Transport colleague Pablo Rodriguez, the former CEO of Hydro-Québec Sophie Brochu, the head of opposition Aref Salem, the boss of the Chamber of Commerce Michel Leblanc and the former mayor Denis Coderre. The popularity of defeated mayoral candidate Balarama Holness, former liberal leader Dominique Anglade and businessman Alexandre Taillefer was also assessed.

“We look at the names, but also the profiles of the people,” explained the mayor. What values ​​do these people embody? We do one survey per year to assess whether the projects and values ​​we put forward are still connected to Montrealers, because it is essential for us. »

This is how we won twice: we had a clear game plan, connected to priorities, with clear solutions. We take the opportunity to assess satisfaction and see how we can improve.

Mme Plante went on to say she didn’t want to “take anything for granted,” despite her recent election victories.

What would she like to improve in the coming months?

“In the last two years, we have had the summit on construction sites and increased the cleanliness squads, but we have to see how we can improve this ecosystem,” she replied. With climate change, we have to start cleaning a month earlier, which means we have to change operations, move budgets, we bring in the snowblowers, we take out the brooms. We must always be better adapted. »

Provincial budget

In anticipation of the provincial budget which will be tabled tomorrow, Valérie Plante revealed that she met the Minister of Finance, Eric Girard a few weeks ago to talk to him about her priorities: housing construction, financing public transit and adaptation. to climate change.

For public transport, for example, she emphasizes that it is necessary to finance new projects, but also the operation of existing networks. “The needs are there, the time is serious,” she said.
