UWindsor hosting first Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization Week

The University of Windsor is hosting a string of events that began Monday as part of its inaugural Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization Week.

“This week celebrates and brings forth awareness of the multifariousness that makes the University of Windsor community the beautiful and unique place that it is,” the university’s Office of the Vice-President of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion said in a media release.

A range of speakers will address different issues each day.

UN International Day of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was marked Monday with a virtual presentation called The Precariousness of Freedom: Slave Resistance as Experience, Process, and Representation.

The event included an “Indigenous highlight” with a performance by Victoria Hecnar, a poet and English literature and creative writing student.

On Tuesday, which is Accessibility Awareness Day, a virtual session will “explore lived experiences and provide insights into how we can become better allies to make our campus and community more inclusive.”

Events on Wednesday will include the launch of the Belonging, Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity (BIDE) Institute. There will also be an entry in the institute’s speaker series with former city councillor John Elliot and Amina Abdulle, a Muslim Canadian educator, poet and “awareness builder.”

Thursday is Sexual Violence Awareness Day and 2SLGBTQIA+ Awareness Day.

Friday is the UN International Day of the Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Saturday will bring a discussion called A Fluid Frontier: Slavery, Resistance, the Underground Railroad, and the Detroit River Region.
