US suspends $ 700 million aid to Sudan after military coup

USA on Monday suspended aid to Sudan following the military seizure of power and urged the immediate reestablishment of a civil government.

“The civilian-led transitional government must be restored immediately and represent the will of the people,” the spokesman for the Department of State, Ned Price.

“In light of these developments, the United States is pausing aid” for economic support, he added.

He explained that the suspension refers to a package of 700 million dollars in economic support destined to help the democratic transition of Sudan.

“We are pausing that full amount,” Price said.

“We are very aware of the people of Sudan. The people of Sudan have made clear their aspirations to continue the transition to democracy and we will continue to support that, including, if necessary, holding those responsible for these anti-democratic actions accountable.”

Price said the United States had no prior knowledge of the military’s intention to overthrow the prime minister. Abdalla Hamdok and he has not been able to contact the detained civilian leader.

This Monday, Sudanese General Abdel Fattah al Burhan dissolved the country’s transitional authorities and decreed a state of emergency.

Since the morning, the “coup” denounced by the international community has been taking place in stages. The prime minister, his wife, several ministers and all the civilian members of the Sovereign Council —The highest authority of the transition— were arrested.

The movement brought dozens of people onto the streets of Khartoum in pro-democracy protests.
