US Senate unanimously condemns Putin as a war criminal

The US Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution condemning the Russian president. Vladimir Putin as a war criminal, a rare display of partisan unity in a deeply divided Congress.

The resolution, introduced by Republican Lindsey Graham and backed by senators from both parties, encourages the International Criminal Court (ICC) of The Hague and other nations to target the Russian Army in any analysis of the war crimes committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“All of us in this chamber come together, Democrats and Republicans, to say that Vladimir Putin cannot escape responsibility for the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people,” Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a speech before the vote.

Russia describes its actions as a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. Putin has also described the country as a US colony with a puppet regime and no tradition of an independent state.

Moscow has not captured any of the 10 largest cities in the country after its raid began on February 24, the largest assault on a European state since 1945.
