Analog Brewing Company, a small Edmonton brewery that opened in 2018 and makes about 1,000 hectoliters a year, was one of four Edmonton breweries to take home gold at annual awards, winning in the Cream Ale category for its Retro Style Pre Prohibition Cream Ale.

“It felt amazing,” said Adam Corsaut, president of Analog Brewing Company. “To get a national award for something that people in our own industry decided among the best in the whole country, they said that in this style, we are the top. For a three-year-old brewery and a small family business … we don’t have the deep pockets that other breweries have, so earning a national title is absolutely incredible. “

Corsaut, 34, says Analog Brewing has a humble origin. In 2016, he and his best friend, and now Analog co-owner Bryan Launier, were already brewing beer at home when one day he approached them for a wedding and the idea of opening a brewery finally clicked. Together, with the help of the family, they signed the lease for their building, at 8620 53 Ave., in December 2017, moved into it in February 2018, and distributed their first beer to K-Days later that summer. .

With its retro cream ale, Corsaut says it is a beer that should be enjoyed by all.

“With our retro-style cream ale, it’s a very traditional beer,” Corsaut said. “The way I usually describe this beer to people, and now I can say it with a gold medal to back it up, is that this beer is the best beer for Dad. This is the ‘I just want a beer that tastes like beer’, and we have done very well.

“When people come into our tavern and say they don’t drink craft beer, they tend to drink ‘insert a big name beer here’, we say, ‘well start here’ and no one ever said they would be disappointed with that beer, if they come. from that point of view. “

“Beet is one of our oldest products. It’s a sour beer and it was actually inspired by a kombucha we had on tap at the tavern. It was a beet kombucha and it had this beautiful color, ”Boutin said, adding that the category they won also includes sub-categories of pumpkin and plant-based beers. “But this beer has a lot of fruity character that comes from it. Lots of citrus and grapefruit notes and beetroot add more earthiness and obviously the deep color that goes with it. “

Town Square brewing began in 2017 and has won awards for three years in a row. Boutin says it is an honor to be mentioned among Canada’s top brewers.

“We are up against incredible colleagues at the national level who believe we have a much better beer than ours. But knowing that we are competing with them and that we are still recognized as some of the best in Canada, not just Alberta, is extremely humbling, “said Boutin.
