Two face 46 combined charges after dragging Winnipeg officer into stolen car – Winnipeg | The Canadian News

A man and a woman face 46 combined charges after fleeing a traffic stop and sending a Winnipeg police officer to hospital on Saturday.

The officer stopped a vehicle that had been reported stolen around 1:40 p.m. in the 900 block of Winnipeg Avenue, police said in a news release.

Police said the officer was talking to the driver when he saw him reach for the gear stick.

The driver managed to put the vehicle in gear and start while the officer was stuck.

The officer was then dragged about six feet before falling onto the road, police said.

Later, other officers stopped the fleeing vehicle near Arlington Street and Logan Avenue and arrested the driver and passenger.

Police said a sawed-off rifle was found in the car.

The officer who made the initial traffic stop was treated at the hospital and has since been released.

The male driver faces 38 charges, including firearms offenses, assaulting a police officer and multiple infractions of court orders.

The passenger was charged with eight different crimes.

Both remain in custody.
