Toronto police officer arrested, charged with sharing confidential information

A 20-year Toronto police officer has been arrested and charged with sharing confidential police information with a member of the public.

Const. Ricardo Gomez, 51, is alleged to have accessed police computer databases “numerous times” between Nov. 5, 2020, and Jan. 28, 2021, to gather the information he was providing to a member of the public about other people.

A professional standards investigation was initiated and Gomez, who was assigned to 12 Division and is from Vaughan, has been suspended with pay since Dec. 2, 2021.

He was criminally charged Wednesday with four counts of breach of trust; two counts of unauthorized use of a computer and one count of mischief.

He has also been charged under the Police Services Act with two counts of discreditable conduct, three counts of breach of confidence and two counts of insubordination.

Gomez is scheduled to appear in Old City Hall court on July 6 and will face an internal disciplinary process after the conclusion of the criminal case against him.

“The Toronto Police Association is aware of the charges laid against our officer and we support him as these allegations make their way through the court process. Given this is an ongoing matter, we will not be making any further comment,” said president Jon Reid.

A Toronto Police Service spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed request for further information before deadline.

Members of the public with information connected to the case are asked to contact police at 416-808-2800 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
