Toronto police investigate ‘allegations of impropriety’ in recent promotional process

The Toronto Police Service is investigating “allegations of impropriety” in the force promotion process, and the conduct of a superior officer is under review, the Star confirmed.

A Toronto police spokesman said in a statement Sunday that the service launched an investigation into allegations of wrongdoing in a “recent” promotion process. No charges have been filed and no officers have been suspended.

Multiple sources confirm to the Star that a high-ranking officer is among the officers under investigation for alleged irregularities in the promotion process.

Sources who spoke to the Star on condition of anonymity said the wrongdoing is alleged to involve cheating: Exam questions are provided to some of the applicants who submitted their names for the promotion.

The most recent promotion process began a few months ago, to the rank of sergeant.

Police officers under investigation by the force can face criminal charges or accusations of professional misconduct under the Ontario Police Services Act. The spokesperson did not provide any details about the alleged irregularity and said that if the matter reaches the disciplinary court or if criminal charges are filed, the matter “would be made public in that process.”

“As of now, it is an ongoing investigation and we cannot add anything else at this time,” the police spokesman said.

Toronto Police also recently conducted a promotion process for personnel superintendents and personnel sergeants. A promotion process for the rank of inspector would begin shortly.
