‘Titane’, big favorite for the 2021 European film awards

After becoming the second director in history to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, from today it is also the most likely winner of the 36th edition of the gala of the European Film Academy Awards (EFA), which will be held in Berlin on December 11 – and therefore returns to the face-to-face format after the 2020 awards had to be delivered through a succession of virtual ceremonies due to the pandemic-; ‘Titane’ is the only one of the aspiring titles to accumulate nominations in the four main categories.

Undoubtedly one of the most transgressive, radical and controversial cinematographic works of the year, ‘Titane’ is the portrait of the sick relationship that, in her escape from a murderous spiral, a young woman establishes with the man who is determined to see in her the son who mysteriously lost decades ago. His footage includes the type of moments of body terror that make one squirm in the armchair, caused by metal-plated uteri, nipples that ooze motor oil, and anatomies deformed by steroids, among other things. But the movie is much more than those taunting tactics might suggest: a reflection on issues such as what it means to live at war with one’s anatomy, on unwanted motherhood and on the trauma caused by repressed sexuality.

Among the fictions that will try to avoid its victory, the four against which it will be measured in the category of Best European Film stand out: ‘The Father’ (four nominations), moving portrait of an Alzheimer’s patient directed by his compatriot Florian Zeller; “Where are you going, Aida?” (four), feverish approach to the Srebrenica massacre by Bosnian Jasmila Zbanic; ‘Compartment Nº 6’ (three), atypical mix of romantic comedy and ‘road movie’ signed by the Finn Juho Kuosmanen; and ‘The hand of God‘, the most autobiographical film of the Italian Paolo Sorrentino.
