On May 5, 1862, the Army of the East, commanded by General Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated the invading troops of Napoleon III.

Although the French invasion was not prevented, this battle became a symbol of national sovereignty and independence and is commemorated every year with a staging of the events.

Entire families participated in this commemoration, characterized by indigenous Zacapoaxtlas and the French army.
