Thirty COVID-19 deaths over the weekend as the number of cases and hospitalizations decline

There were 30 deaths from COVID-19 over the weekend in Alberta, nearly double the 16 announced on Friday, while the number of people hospitalized with the virus decreased.

Albertans hospitalized with COVID reached 981 as of Monday, the province announced, a reduction from the 1,000 hospitalized on Friday.

Across the province there were 12,302 active cases on Monday, a drop of hundreds of cases from the 12,978 reported on Friday.

The number of people in intensive care with COVID was also lower, with 225 in the ICU on Monday, up from 229 on Friday.

Of Albertans in the ICU, 90.6% are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated; and of the 756 who are not in the ICU, 72.5 percent are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, Medical Director of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said in an update on Twitter.

The total number of COVID deaths in Alberta was 2,976 on Monday.

“Unfortunately, 30 new COVID-19 related deaths that occurred over 11 days were also reported to Alberta Health in the last 72 hours. I extend my sincere condolences to all who are grieving today, ”Hinshaw said.

“These deaths are a sad reminder that we must continue to do everything we can to protect ourselves and our health care system from the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19 by reducing opportunities for the virus to spread.”

In the Edmonton area, there were 2,913 active cases, up from 3,050 on Friday, part of an ongoing drop in COVID infections since they peaked on Sept. 26, 10 days after new health restrictions were announced. and the vaccine passport system will begin.

The proportion of Albertans age 12 and older who have received at least one dose of vaccine increased to 86%, or 73.2% of the total population, and 77.4% were fully vaccinated, or 65, 8% of the total population.
