Here are 5 things to do in Metro Vancouver this week:
Vancouver International Polo Festival
When: August 13, 2:30-10 p.m.
Where: Southlands Riding Club, 7025 Macdonald St., Vancouver

Presented jointly by the Vancouver Polo Club and the Southlands Riding Club, the inaugural year of the Vancouver International Polo Festival features polo matches, a divot stomp (where spectators replace mounds of dirt raised by hoofs during play), a band, DJs, polo-themed custom art installations, and gallery-style art walk. The themed event also includes tango dancers and Argentine cuisine. General admission tickets offer access to a Veuve Cliquot Champagne tent, a beer hall with games, a complimentary wine tasting, and a curated cocktail program. In addition, polo clinics and interactive games will be held, with 100 percent of proceeds going to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Southland Horse Rescue Program.

film noir 2022

It’s August, and that means easy marks, treacherous ladies, and smoking guns. This year’s film noir selection at the Cinematheque includes, among others, the 1947 film Nightmare Alley, recently remade by Guillermo del Toro; Billy Wilder’s classic Sunset Boulevard; I Wake Up Screaming, with Victor Mature and Betty Grable; and two Raymond Chandler adaptations, The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. The first is Howard Hawks’ 1946 film with Bogie and Bacall, the second is Robert Altman’s loose and sunny 1973 film with Elliott Gould as private detective Philip Marlowe. The Cinematheque is also hosting a two-day film noir workshop on August 13 and a 50th anniversary film noir party at Performance Works on August 19.

Guide My Way: A Celebration of the Music of Sedna

Postponed due to COVID-19 and the loss of puppetry, Urban Ink’s new musical Sedna makes a smooth debut with this concert. Sedna creator Corey Payette performs the show’s music alongside Chelsea Rose, Merewyn Comeau and JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter Desirée Dawson. The concert also features dancers choreographed by Shion Skye Carter. Large-scale production of the Urban Ink performance was delayed by the pandemic and then by the November 2021 flooding in Abbotsford, which damaged production materials, including large-scale lantern puppets. Payette is the creator of the acclaimed 2017 musical Children of God.

Led by vocalist Lydia Night, Los Angeles indie-rock band The Regrettes arrive in town fresh from a well-received set at Lollapalooza 2022 in Chicago. The quartet is touring in support of their third album, Further Joy, which follows their 2017 debut, Feel Your Feelings Fool!, and its critically acclaimed follow-up, How Do You Love? 2019. According to the Washington Square News, the new album “is a significant departure from the garage punk-rock sound that covered their previous work…and instead leans toward pounding synths and thumping pop beats.”

BC Farmers Markets

Buskers have returned to local farmers markets for the first time since the pandemic. Some of the people who provide a soundtrack to buying fruit, fish and homemade delicacies include Ranj Singh, Jana Seale and Caden Knudson. Singh, at the Port Coquitlam Farmers Market on August 11 and the Surrey Urban Farmers Market on August 14, combines Eastern rhythms and melodies with Western folk. Seale from Chilliwack plays and sings coffee shop pop/folk. She will be at Abbotsford Market on August 13, White Rock on August 14 and Coast Valley Market Civic Plaza North Vancouver on August 17. Knudson, from Maple Ridge, is one half of the duo Knudson & Connaughton. He is at the Haney Farmers Market on August 13 and the Surrey Urban Farmers Market on August 20.
