They will invest 4,000 million pesos in new container terminals

The federal government will invest in 2022 just over 4,000 million pesos to design, build and equip two specialized “high-performance” container terminals that will facilitate the commercial activity of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT).

The largest amount, 2,277.3 million pesos, will be in the port of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and will have an area of 38 hectares, with a marginal dock of 800 meters that will allow the docking of two vessels at the same time, in addition to a static capacity. of 25,000 TEUs (containers) and dynamic capacity of 1.3 million TEUs per year.

In the Gulf of Mexico, in the port of Coatzacoalcos, in Veracruz, the other terminal will be installed that will require 1,812.2 million pesos with practically the same characteristics.

Based on the information from the integral port administrations of Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos, which will be in charge of the projects, the development of the terminals will be two stages, and the growth and expansion of services will be associated with the estimated cargo projections and resources. available (basic, complementary or support studies for the works, authorization and release of budgets, construction permits and licenses, etc.).

To begin with, next year the start of the stage of shaping the platform and dredging is contemplated.

With these two works, which are part of the current government’s strategic infrastructure projects, it is also sought to detonate the construction industry, which has not managed to achieve its recovery after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic that added to the low activity that it had been showing since the beginning of 2019.

Among the collateral effects of the interoceanic corridor are: the modernization of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec railroad (FIT), the referred ports, the strengthening of the highway infrastructure and rural roads, as well as the port network and a gas pipeline will be built to supply to businesses and domestic consumers.

In addition, polygons will be created along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec that will have incentives to attract investment that will trigger the economic and social development of the region based on productive vocations with the greatest potential.

Greater competitiveness

According to information from CIIT, the new terminal infrastructure will make it easier for international shipping companies to enter these ports and operate large volumes of container loading and unloading and, on the other hand, users of the rail network tracks assigned to the FIT can receive a safe and efficient service in the transfer of their goods between these two ports and in their connections with the rest of the country.

For 2022, budgetary resources are already contemplated, corresponding to the first stage. However, among the risk factors to continue the work is the possibility that “the Chamber of Deputies does not approve the Budget of Expenditures of the Federation for the corresponding years” or that there is no availability for the application of resources by the two port administrators.

It is also contemplated “that the necessary procedures and procedures are not carried out in a timely or proper manner to comply with the provisions established by the Investment Unit of the SHCP in relation to the registration or updating of the Project in the Portfolio of Investment Programs and Projects that It is part of this Secretariat, or in the same sense, those corresponding to the local or environmental authorities for the granting of licenses and / or permits that may be required for the construction of the project ”.
